How To

How to make a Photo Quilt (memory)

Here are a few hints on how to make a memory quilt, also known as picture quilts.   Remember, there are no wrong ways!  The more personal the quilt, the more special it will be!  This is a favorite of mine to make.  It creates memories and the one who receives this gift is always tearful!  They love them!

Pick a pattern.  It can be as simple or as complicated as you want.

The following are instructions to the quilt shown in the Photo Album:

A)  Cut out 12 or 15 white cotton squares that are between 12" to 15" square (depending on how big you want the quilt to be.

B) There are few options of paper to use for transferring.  You can use the Iron on Transfer  paper that you use right out of your printer.   When your print, click on the "print mirror image" so that it prints onto your transfer paper backwards and onto your cotton fabric in the correct direction.

You can also buy  Photo Fabric that combines Step A.  This is special cotton fabric that goes directly into your printer and you print directly onto your cloth.

C) Cut 2-3" set up strips to sew between the white squares and border them.

D) In a contrasting fabric, Cut out a border the size you would like.  I like the 5 to 6" border, but it's your preference.

E)  Quilt any way you like.

Variations are endless and fun!

This is a great project to give to the grandparents.  The Grandmothers received these as gifts.  See our Photo Album !

I even used the youngest grandson's hand prints to applique and the eldest grandson drew a picture that we scanned into the computer and Transferred on to the quilt!

INSPIRATION

Have you ever wondered how to quilt?  Have you ever wondered how you pick the fabrics? Choose the colors?  Mix and match and produce a beautiful heirloom?  Create a story out of fabric?   I have found that it's already in you.  Pick the patterns and colors that draw your eye.  This is different for everyone!  I'm drawn to bold and vibrant colors!  Some are drawn to pastels and flowers!

If you are a beginner, pick a pattern with simple angles but one that you love!  The key is to do what you enjoy!  What inspires you!

If you are not a beginner and are having trouble with a pattern, try surrounding yourself with the fabrics that inspire and start sewing!  See what comes together!  Maybe it will be a crazy quilt!  Maybe a masterpiece!   It will be yours!
